DDoS Attacks: The Basics to Protect Your Network

A DDoS (Distributed Denial of Service) attack is a malicious attack intended to disrupt or completely disable the function of a target (usually a website or online service).

This type of attack uses spoofed traffic from many different sources to excessively exhaust the target's resources (bandwidth, server capacity, etc.).

DDoS attacks cause the target system to slow down or become completely inaccessible, leading to service interruptions. Such attacks can damage businesses' reputations, reduce customer satisfaction and cause financial losses.

These attacks are often carried out over large networks called botnets. A botnet is created when many devices (computers, IoT devices, etc.) are compromised by malware and act on the commands of the attacker.

To protect against DDoS attacks, it is important to monitor your network's traffic, detect unusual activity and respond quickly. Various methods such as firewalls, intrusion detection and prevention systems (IDS/IPS), traffic filtering and load balancing can provide an effective defense against DDoS attacks.
